Acupuncture is the insertion of tiny needles into specific points along the energy meridians of the body. This practice has been used for thousands of years in China and other parts of Asia. These points have a high density of nerve endings, arterioles, lymphatic vessels, and mast cells. The stimulation of the points helps to rebalance and heal the body by:
  • Moving energy (Qi) to provide pain relief. The body releases endogenous opioids, endorphins, serotonin, and norepinephrine during acupuncture.

  • Stimulate and regulates the immune system. This is essential when trying to control and cure allergies or IBD, when fighting cancer, or when trying to recover from a chronic or infectious disease.

  • Stimulates the nervous system. This has best been shown with spinal disease such as IVDD or wobblers. The calming effect on the mind is beneficial for stress relief and behavior disorders.

  • Other effects: fever reducing, GI regulation, anti-inflammatory, blood pressure regulation, reproductive regulation, performance enhancement, improves circulation, and many others.
Stimulation of the acupuncture points is done using a combination of:
  • Dry needle – inserting a tiny needle in a point for either a few seconds or a few minutes.
  • Aquapuncture – injection of a substance, often Vitamin B12, into the acupuncture point.
  • Electro-acupuncture – stimulating the acupuncture points with a mild, electrical current.
  • Moxibustion – warming acupuncture points with the burning of an herb at the site.
